Ground, waters and natural cover
The Route of the Exodus, Cities of Refuge and the Levites and Who Lived Where, and When are drawn on View.Bible’s base map. Its waters of c. 2000 BC, its natural cover and its ground rest on published studies and open data, each named on the sheet and on the map’s own page. Among them: the CHELSA V2.1 climatology (Karger et al., CC0); rain gauges of NOAA’s GHCN; the Geological Map of Israel (Geological Survey of Israel); Bender’s Geologic Map of Jordan (USGS Professional Paper 560-I), digitised by M. Kempf 2023 (CC BY 4.0); the USGS geo2bg map (Open-File Report 97-470B); and, for Egypt, the Ahramat Branch digitised from Ghoneim et al. 2024 (CC BY 4.0).
The years of the kings
E. R. Thiele, The Mysterious Numbers of the Hebrew Kings (3rd ed., 1983): the years of the reigns on The Kings of Israel and Judah, as his table is commonly given. A reckoning, not a statement of Scripture.
Public domain
James Ussher, Annals of the World (1650–1654). The timeline’s years are reckoned from Creation in 4004 BC, as Ussher reckoned them, and he is cited as a check on the reckoning in From Adam to Moses. The Route of the Exodus gives his years beside those counted from 1 Kings 6:1, and The Kings of Israel and Judah notes his years for the division and the fall of Jerusalem.
The Bible Inventory
The people, events and years on the timeline, and every fact on its cards, come from the Bible Inventory: View.Bible’s own record of the people, places and events of Scripture, each fact with the verses it rests on, read in the New King James Version. It is written book by book and grows as it goes. The peoples, events and place names of Who Lived Where, and When come from it too, with a few facts from a second reading of the same chapters that it does not yet hold, each marked so. It is part of the site’s own work, below.
